Common Causes of Age Spots and How to Deal With Them

Age spots are blemishes on the skin that are associated with aging. As we get older our skin begins to sag and become dry. Also known as liver spots, they are very unattractive on the skin. No one likes to get them and there is enough to worry about when you're aging. Unfortunately there's no way to prevent aging altogether. This is a process that everyone goes through and which we just have to learn to deal with. However, while there is no magic potion to prevent them, there are more than enough treatments that can help to get rid of age spots and renew your youthful skin.

Causes

The first step is to understand exactly what it is that causes these spots. This way you can do everything you can to prevent them in the first place. While aging is a process that's undeniable, you can be lucky enough to avoid aging spots if you know how.

Age spots are mainly caused by age. However, ultraviolet light is another main perpetrator in this case. When the skin has an overexposure to ultraviolet light, this accelerates the production of melanin in the skin. As a result, the skin turns darker in certain areas, and these are what are known as age spots. These spots develop when extra melanin in the skin is left in clumps due to a higher concentration than normal. No one likes having them and no one likes looking at them.

Treatment

One of the best ways to deal with these spots is to try a skin bleaching treatment. This is similar to the bleaching creams you would use to dye your hair or eyebrows. Skin bleaching can be incredibly effective at getting rid of those awful age spots. It may take a few treatments but you will definitely notice a difference. It's usually safest to go to a dermatologist for this treatment rather than attempting it on your own. Bleach is a dangerous enough chemical agent to start with and if you're dealing with age spots on your face it could be really unsafe.

There are other ways to deal with these spots as well. Chemical peels are often helpful in getting rid of age spots for once and for all. Chemical peels can help with age spots but also with wrinkles, sun damage and even mild scarring. Before going in for a chemical peel to treat your age spots, it's important to stop taking certain drugs. Your doctor can advise you of which you need to stop taking, as these could interfere with the chemicals used in this procedure. This is an outpatient procedure so it's not that serious and you can leave the same day.

The procedure really isn't all that painful. You'll feel a somewhat hot sensation on your feel as you're having the chemical peel and it will be over before you know it. Most patients report a dramatic difference in the look of their age spots after having this procedure.

These methods can be rather costly. If you don't have the funds to go forth with these sorts of treatments for your age spots, the best thing you can do is use some of the more affordable skin care products. When shopping around, don't feel overwhelmed by the thousands of products you see staring back at you from off the shelves. Make sure you read through the list of ingredients and check for Acai oil and caffeine. These are two of the best active ingredients for treating age spots.

Some people do everything they can to deal with aging spots and don't see any difference. Whether you're able to completely get rid of those annoying age spots or not, it's still crucial that you work to take care of your skin so you can prevent getting any more in the future.
